Australian employers fast-track digital change amid skills gap

Wed, 12th Nov 2025

Australian employers are accelerating digital transformation efforts across their organisations, with new research revealing that 84% have a department participating in significant initiatives over the next two years. However, the same report indicates that almost half of employers do not believe their workforce currently has the skills required to successfully implement these plans.

Transformation priorities

The research, based on an independent survey of 500 hiring managers across finance, IT, and human resources, shows that employee self-service portals and mobile HR apps are the most commonly planned or active transformation project, cited by 51% of respondents. Significant investment in data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning capabilities follows at 43%. Digital learning ecosystems and AI-powered HR analytics platforms are also each underway or in the planning phase for 43% and 42% of employers, respectively.

Other popular projects include automating accounts payable and receivable processes (42%), upgrading digital customer experiences with chatbots or self-service portals (39%), and migrating HR and business systems to cloud environments (38%). Several employers are implementing or upgrading core enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and real-time analytics dashboards, both at 36%.

Readiness challenges

Despite widespread intentions to digitise, only 47% of employers believe their employees are fully equipped with the skills and talent needed to deliver these initiatives. A further 52% acknowledge some skill gaps-broken down to 42% citing minor gaps and 10% reporting significant workforce capability gaps.

"Digital transformation has shifted, from being a competitive differentiator to a business imperative. The fact that most organisations now have a roadmap in place shows that we've moved beyond experimentation and into a new stage where digital capabilities form the backbone of core business operations," said Nicole Gorton, Director, Robert Half.

Development strategies

To address existing skill deficits, employers are turning to a combination of upskilling, recruitment, and third-party partnerships. The majority (57%) expect to upskill current employees, with another 41% indicating a focus on reskilling staff for new roles created by digital transformation. Additionally, 39% plan to hire new permanent employees, while 35% expect to bring in contract talent. Around 32% are looking to partner with external service providers for additional support.

Investment in these approaches varies according to organisation size and sector, with larger enterprises more likely to use a blend of hiring and partnering strategies, and smaller enterprises focusing on internal development and targeted hires.

Leadership buy-in

The readiness for digital transformation projects is also subject to approval and resource constraints. While 45% say digital transformation has a defined roadmap, 39% are in the early planning stages, and 10% are still seeking budget or leadership buy-in. Only 6% report no significant digital transformation initiatives planned within their organisations.

Broader impact

Digital transformation projects are targeting a range of departments, including HR, finance, and customer experience, driven by the dual goals of increasing efficiency and improving interactions for both employees and customers. Integration of ESG and sustainability platforms, upgrades to compliance systems, and the development of real-time financial dashboards further reflect the diversity of digital projects underway in the Australian market.

"The biggest hurdle to digital transformation isn't always the technology itself, but the availability of skills to implement and sustain it. Organisations are recognising that success will come from a mix of hiring, upskilling, and leveraging external partners to ensure they have both the technical expertise and change management capabilities to deliver impact," said Gorton.
