Google's AI push prompts Aussie firms to boost visibility

Yesterday

Google's latest integration of AI technologies into its search and business platforms is prompting small businesses in Australia to enhance their online visibility and optimise their digital presence to remain competitive.

Gary Mandelkow, Chief Technology Officer of Localsearch, emphasised the importance of small businesses adapting to these changes, noting that AI-driven search will favour businesses with well-optimised, AI-friendly digital footprints. He warned, "Google is evolving, and small businesses must evolve with it. AI-driven search will prioritise businesses with a well-optimised, AI-friendly digital presence. If your website and Google Business Profile aren't structured in a way that AI understands, you risk disappearing from search results when potential customers are researching something that your business offers."

The rise of AI like Google's Gemini, and its impact on search rankings, signifies a shift in how businesses must operate online to be "Google Ready." According to Mandelkow, businesses that fail to make these adjustments may be left behind in the evolving digital landscape. However, he offered reassurance by stating that small businesses can take straightforward measures to remain competitive. "The good news is that small businesses can take simple, proactive steps now to remain competitive - and those that do will gain a real edge over slow adapters," he said. He added, "SEO isn't a scary acronym; it's just about doing the right work in the back-end so that when someone searches for a product or service that you provide, your business appears as a trusted option. Having a strong presence on the likes of Google Maps and review sites has never been more crucial."

Beyond the high stakes of online visibility, Mandelkow explained the importance of Google's role as a digital gateway for small businesses. "Before the internet revolutionised how we do business, small businesses relied heavily on word-of-mouth and window signs. Fast forward to today, and that's still important - but the game has changed. In 2025, success hinges on being seen and found online, and for many small businesses, the key to this visibility is Google," he stated. "From search results to reviews and AI-powered recommendations, being 'Google Ready' is no longer optional - it's essential."

Mandelkow also highlighted Google's strategic movements such as limiting search scraping tools as part of a broader effort to secure data for its AI-powered search products. He elaborated, "AI-driven search refers to how Google uses advanced technology to better understand and rank businesses based on their online presence. Businesses with well-structured websites, relevant content, and customer engagement will be prioritised in search results."

Addressing the strategy for small businesses, Gary Mandelkow explained, "For small businesses, this means visibility depends on being active within Google's ecosystem and building a presence across Google-trusted platforms. If Google is the highway Aussies use to find businesses, small businesses need to be on that road."

He continued, "Google is no longer just a search engine, it's a business directory loaded with customer insights, including Google Maps – real-time location and foot traffic trends, Google Business Profile – customer reviews, business info, and user-generated content, and Google Search & Gmail – data that fine-tunes AI-driven recommendations."

Discussing actionable steps for small business owners, Mandelkow suggested, "If you're not on Google, you're losing customers: People rely on Google, and if they don't find your business, they'll find a competitor. Set up and optimise your Google Business Profile today to ensure your business is visible when customers are looking. Listings on trusted platforms like Google Maps and Apple Business Connect can help increase your visibility even further."

He added, "Your data is your digital goldmine: Google protects its data because it's powerful - and yours is no different. Regularly update your SEO data, and focus on high-quality content and fast-loading websites. As AI evolves, your site must be in top shape to stay competitive in search rankings. Track customer interactions, search trends, and content quality to boost your organic search results."

Finally, Mandelkow summarised the key takeaway for small businesses: "The message is clear: if small businesses want to be found, they need to be Google Ready. At Localsearch, we help small businesses stay ahead by offering tailored SEO strategies that ensure they're not just seen, but preferred by Google's AI. Stay visible, stay competitive, and stay 'Google Ready' with our expert guidance."
