Optus fast-tracks 5G rollout in regional Australia
Optus has initiated the rollout of an enhanced 5G network in regional Australia through a network and spectrum sharing arrangement with TPG Telecom under the Multi-Operator-Core Network (MOCN) agreement.
The agreement facilitates a rapid deployment of 5G capabilities, allowing Optus to complete its regional 5G rollout two years ahead of its original schedule. This strategic move intends to bolster Optus' network performance in regional areas significantly.
Besides accelerating the timeline, the MOCN agreement enables Optus to utilise additional spectrum resources, which is expected to deliver improved service quality for its regional Australian customers.
Over the coming years, Optus plans to expedite the establishment of 5G sites across regional Australia, aiming for 1,500 sites by the end of 2028 and 2,444 sites by the end of 2030.
This initiative is part of Optus' longstanding commitment to serving regional communities, where it has been active for over thirty years.
Anthony Shiner, Managing Director, Customer Solutions at Optus, stated, "More Optus coverage across Australia means more opportunities for our customers to connect with family, business clients, friends and other loved ones in their busy lives."
He added, "The fast-tracked 5G rollout allows us to enhance Optus coverage and capacity for our customers, ensuring they can stay connected with 5G in more places and enjoy a great mobile experience."
In addition to the MOCN agreement, Optus is extending its 5G coverage across Australia with the introduction of Optus 5G+, which is said to provide up to five times more coverage than its standard 5G offering.
Optus 5G+ operates independently of the existing 4G infrastructure. It is designed to provide broader coverage and increased capacity, supporting a better mobile experience for eligible customers who are on compatible plans and devices.
Optus 5G+ is available in selected areas, including Busselton in Western Australia, Orange in New South Wales, Toowoomba in Queensland, Ballarat in Victoria, and Launceston in Tasmania, among others.
Speaking about the enhancement, Shiner noted, "Optus 5G+ represents our ongoing commitment to innovation and delivering the very best for our customers. Whether you're in a busy metro area or exploring regional Australia, we're working to provide stronger, faster connections in more places."
Optus has also been working alongside Starlink to extend connectivity across the nation and launched Satellite Internet for Business in 2024.
Optus and Starlink are continuing their collaboration to develop satellite direct-to-mobile technology, with local testing set to commence soon in partnership with SpaceX.
The efforts in expanding infrastructure and technology underscore Optus' intention to enhance competitive capability and foster innovation within the telecommunication sector in Australia.
