ACS Victoria launches workshop for skilled migrant spouses

Mon, 22nd Jul 2024

The Australian Computer Society's Victorian Branch has initiated a workshop series specifically designed for the spouses of skilled migrants holding IT qualifications. Aimed at helping these individuals explore their potential within the Australian ICT market, the program seeks to address common challenges faced by migrant spouses in securing relevant employment.

"The program participants will be guided by industry experts, coaches, and recruiters on the job market dynamics and how to present themselves," said Manjusha Bhakta, a member of the ACS Branch Executive Committee. This initiative aims to provide the necessary resources and connections for skilled individuals who have recently migrated to Australia with their partners.

The series targets the difficulties that many migrant spouses encounter, despite possessing the necessary expertise for the Australian ICT sector. They often face a lack of networking opportunities and guidance, which can impede their job search efforts. "We have so many skilled people who've arrived with their partners who have much to offer. We'd really like this workshop series to help newly arrived spouses and their families settle into their new lives in Australia and allow them to realise their potential," Bhakta added.

Dr Rod Dilnutt, Chair of ACS Victoria, emphasized the untapped potential of migrant partners with ICT talent. "Partners of migrants with ICT talent are often an unrecognised and untapped resource to alleviate the skills shortage in the Australian economy," he stated. The program offers a structured pathway to employment for these individuals, who may otherwise struggle to gain employment in their fields.

The workshop series will provide several key benefits. Participants will receive expert guidance from industry professionals, including tailored advice on preparing CVs, optimizing LinkedIn profiles, and networking effectively. The series will also cover essential tips and practices for seeking employment within the Australian ICT market.

The comprehensive program spans six weeks, with each weekly session lasting two hours. These sessions aim to enhance participants' understanding and skills, thereby improving their candidacy for roles in the ICT sector. Additionally, participants will gain access to ACS training, a network of professionals, and job opportunities through a one-year ACS membership, which includes various trainings, seminars, certifications, and networking events.

The in-person workshop will commence on 14 August, with weekly gatherings over a six-week period. The cost for participation is AUD $389, inclusive of the one-year ACS membership.
