Garney adopts Hyland for SAP SuccessFactors in HR shift

Garney has adopted Hyland for SAP SuccessFactors as part of its human resources transformation, expanding its existing use of Hyland OnBase.

The construction company said the system is designed to centralise employee content, improve reliability across HR operations and provide a cloud-based foundation for further automation. It brings content, workflows and governance into SAP SuccessFactors, which Garney uses to manage HR.

Garney, which works in water and wastewater infrastructure, employs around 3,000 people across 19 offices in the US. It wanted to modernise how employee information and documents are managed within its HR systems.

Direct access

Under the new setup, HR teams can access employee records and related content directly within SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central. Hyland said this should reduce manual processes and lower the risks associated with handling fragmented information.

Hyland has presented the rollout as an extension of Garney's use of OnBase, its enterprise content management product. In this setup, OnBase sits behind Hyland for SAP SuccessFactors to manage HR documents and workflows alongside the core SAP platform.

Wider shift

The move reflects a broader trend among employers to link document management more closely with cloud-based HR software, particularly where records, compliance processes and employee files are spread across multiple systems. Bringing those functions into one environment can simplify access for HR staff and reduce duplication, although implementation depends heavily on process design and data governance.

Steve Baird, Chief Revenue Officer at Hyland, said Garney's project showed how content management systems can shape broader HR transformation efforts.

"Garney's story is a powerful example of how the right content platform can change the trajectory of a transformation initiative," said Baird.

"By unifying HR content with Hyland for SAP SuccessFactors, Garney has been able to reduce risk, deliver immediate value to HR teams, and build a scalable foundation designed to evolve alongside the business," added Baird.

Growth plans

Garney linked the project to its growth plans and said it wanted a system that could support further process change over time. It described secure access to HR content and more consistent workflows as part of that effort.

Vendor role

For Hyland, the Garney rollout is another example of a software supplier seeking deeper relevance within core business applications rather than operating as a separate content repository. Vendors in the sector have increasingly focused on embedding document access and governance into systems used daily by HR, finance and operations teams.

Business scale

Garney's business includes water and wastewater pipelines, treatment facilities, pumping stations, water storage tanks and related heavy civil projects. As an employee-owned company with a dispersed footprint, it faces the administrative complexity that often pushes construction and infrastructure groups to standardise HR processes and records handling.

The aim is to create a more unified HR environment in which trusted information is available where staff already work. In turn, that is expected to support HR administration as the business grows.

Garney is 100% employee-owned, with 3,000 employee-owners nationwide.
