Nutanix adds Azure Virtual Desktop support for AHV

Nutanix has added support for Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid on its AHV hypervisor, allowing organisations to run Azure Virtual Desktop session hosts on premises while using Microsoft's cloud control plane.

The support marks the general availability of Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid with Nutanix AHV. It extends a deployment model for companies that want to keep desktop workloads and data in their own data centres while still using Azure services for identity, access and session brokering.

Nutanix worked on the initiative as a launch ecosystem partner, helping bring Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid support to AHV. Under this setup, the Azure Virtual Desktop control plane stays in Azure, while session hosts run on Nutanix infrastructure in customer environments.

Azure Arc connects those session hosts to the Azure environment. Users authenticate through Microsoft Entra ID, while organisations continue to manage identity, policy and related controls through Microsoft's cloud environment.

At the same time, customers retain direct control over virtual machine capacity, lifecycle management, networking, storage, disaster recovery and automation on AHV. Nutanix is positioning the model for organisations with regulatory, operational or economic reasons to be selective about where desktop workloads run.

The approach is likely to resonate in sectors such as government, financial services and healthcare, where data residency and digital sovereignty rules can limit the use of public cloud infrastructure for some workloads. Latency requirements and the cost of moving or storing data externally can also shape desktop deployment decisions.

Hybrid model

The arrangement gives IT teams two operating options. Organisations with established scripting and automation practices can use Nutanix APIs and tools to manage Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid directly. Those seeking a more packaged approach can use Nerdio Manager for tasks including virtual machine provisioning, lifecycle management, power controls, image and patch updates, policy management and autoscaling.

Support includes Windows Server multi-session and Windows 11 Enterprise single-session. Windows 11 multi-session remains limited to Azure and Azure Local, reflecting Microsoft's existing platform boundaries for that product.

The announcement fits a broader pattern in enterprise infrastructure, as suppliers respond to demand for hybrid operating models rather than insisting on a full migration to public cloud. For many companies, desktop virtualisation remains an area where policy, user experience and legacy systems continue to drive a mix of on-premises and cloud deployment.

Microsoft described Nutanix support as an extension of that approach. "Customer choice and flexibility are at the core of Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid. Nutanix's support helps organisations extend the benefits of Azure Virtual Desktop to environments that align with their operational and business requirements, enabling a smoother path to modernisation while preserving existing investments," said Bhavya Chopra, Partner Director, Product Management, Microsoft.

The launch also reflects Nutanix's effort to strengthen its position in end-user computing and hybrid cloud infrastructure by linking its AHV platform more closely with large software ecosystems. Desktop virtualisation has long been a market where infrastructure vendors, cloud providers and management software companies overlap, and support for Azure Virtual Desktop broadens Nutanix's appeal to customers already committed to Microsoft tools.

For customers, the practical question is whether they can use Azure Virtual Desktop services without moving every part of the environment into Azure-hosted infrastructure. Nutanix argues that the hybrid model addresses that by separating the management layer from the location of the session hosts.

That could matter to organisations that need to modernise desktop delivery but remain tied to internal hosting because of compliance requirements, internal governance rules or existing data centre investments. It may also appeal to companies that want to keep sensitive workloads closer to users or internal systems while still using Microsoft's desktop control framework.

"The value for customers is straightforward. They no longer have to choose between using Azure Virtual Desktop and maintaining control over where their desktops run. If compliance, data sovereignty, latency or cost means those workloads need to stay on premises, they can run them on Nutanix AHV while still using Microsoft's Azure Virtual Desktop services. It gives IT teams a more practical way to modernise without forcing every workload into the same model," said Maner.
