Aware Super appoints Richard Exton to lead technology strategy
Aware Super has appointed Richard Exton to the newly created role of Group Executive, Chief Technology and Data Officer.
Exton will commence his new position in November, reporting directly to Chief Executive Officer Deanne Stewart, as the superannuation fund seeks to strengthen its technology, data, and artificial intelligence capabilities in line with its strategic objectives through to 2030.
Strategic priorities
With this executive appointment, Aware Super is placing increased emphasis on technology and data as it aims to enhance digital experiences and maintain a strong focus on cybersecurity, member services, and improved retirement outcomes for its 1.2 million members.
"Aware is focused on maintaining our strong reputation as an industry leader in digital by continuing to enhance our personalised member experience, and remaining vigilant about our cybersecurity protections," said Chief Executive Officer Deanne Stewart.
Stewart highlighted the integral role that technology, data, and AI play in achieving the fund's objectives, noting that these functions have now been formally elevated to executive leadership.
"Richard's leadership will continue to be instrumental as we accelerate our digital capabilities and ensure technology remains a key enabler of member outcomes and competitive advantage for Aware Super," Stewart said.
She added, "This appointment demonstrates how integral AI, data and technology is in supporting our strategic priorities to 2030."
Leadership experience
During his eight-year tenure at Aware Super, Exton has been closely involved in significant technology and operational changes within the fund. These include the 2023 insourcing of the fund's administration, which notably improved its digital capabilities, as well as a platform modernisation project that reduced Aware Super's technology infrastructure by a third and improved member self-service options.
Stewart noted the role of Exton and the broader technology team in driving these initiatives. She stated the 200-person technology team will "continue to embed AI and digital innovation across the business to deliver even more personalised and secure digital experiences for Aware Super members, with an unwavering focus on retirement outcomes."
Workforce and industry recognition
Under Exton's leadership, there has been increased female representation within Aware Super's technology team, which has reached 35%. The organisation has received industry recognition, including Exton ranking fourth nationally and first in the financial services sector in Australia's CIO50 Awards. The technology team was also recognised as Australia's Best Technology Team for Culture in 2024.
Background and qualifications
Richard Exton has a career spanning approximately thirty years in technology leadership roles across the global financial services sector. Prior to joining Aware Super, he held senior positions at Macquarie Group, ANZ Bank, and Commonwealth Bank of Australia, working across the Asia-Pacific region.
Exton holds a Master's in Financial Technology from the University of New South Wales and a Graduate Certificate of Commercial Law from Deakin University. He has also completed executive education courses at Harvard Business School and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
By creating the new executive role and appointing Exton, Aware Super is aligning its operational structure with its strategic priorities, with a clear focus on continuing technology development, data management, and the adoption of artificial intelligence to support its member base.
