Azul Platform Prime boosts Java performance by 37%

Wed, 16th Oct 2024

Azul has announced that its Java platform, Azul Platform Prime, achieves a significant 37% average performance increase over other OpenJDK distributions.

This performance boost allows organisations to enhance application performance and responsiveness, cut computing costs in cloud and infrastructure, and boost DevOps productivity without requiring recompilation or modifications to application code. One notable example is Workday, which improved its SaaS operational efficiency by 95%, saving millions by eliminating over 42,000 person hours in an 18-month span, thus allowing developers to engage in more productive tasks.

Azul has also launched its Java Performance Engineering Lab, designed to work closely with Java developers and customers' technical teams to provide superior Java performance. An impressive outcome from such collaboration is observed with LMAX Group, a global fintech firm that benefitted from a 48% performance increase compared to operating solely on OpenJDK, which has enhanced their low-latency trade execution capabilities.

Andrew Phillips, Chief Technology Officer at LMAX Group, commented on the partnership, "Our long-term partnership and the results we achieved in company with Azul are a testament to the strength of the partnership and the combined technologies that form its basis. We look forward to continuing to innovate and scale on the Azul platform."

Azul's new lab conducts continuous benchmarking against industry standards like Renaissance, DaCapo, and SpecJBB, in addition to evaluating performance on popular Java-based Apache projects, to ensure ongoing improvements in Java releases. They also assess emerging technologies such as new hardware capabilities and updated CPU architectures.

The company's Java platform, Azul Platform Prime, is compatible with Java SE specifications and enhances code execution speed with features such as the Falcon JIT compiler, which is said to run Java code 20-50% faster than other OpenJDK distributions. The platform incorporates capabilities like consistent service levels under high loads through its C4 Pauseless Garbage Collector and offers optimised start-up and warmup processes.

Azul's CEO and Co-founder, Scott Sellers, noted the advancements, "Azul is redefining what's possible with high-performance Java platforms. Today we're delivering an average of 37% higher performance compared to other OpenJDK distributions, empowering enterprises to achieve unprecedented levels of speed, efficiency, and innovation without overhauling their applications. In today's cloud-driven economy, where every millisecond and dollar counts, Azul Platform Prime is the clear choice for organisations looking to enhance user experiences, reduce operational costs and drive competitive advantage."

Experts like William Fellows, Research Director, Cloud-Native at 451 Research, acknowledge the platform's benefits, "Azul's Platform Prime offering plays in the market for high-performance Java platform capabilities that deliver faster and more predictable execution, greater consistency, and improved resource efficiency, which high-spending cloud infrastructure customers require."

This development is particularly pertinent for sectors relying on high-performance computing, such as trading, payments, and ecommerce, where resource efficiency and speed are crucial in meeting the increasing demands of consumers and businesses alike.
