Australian Payments Plus has agreed to sell its Beem consumer payments app to Bolt Group, shifting ownership of an app with more than 3 million downloads.
There will be no immediate changes for existing Beem users. Services will continue as normal while the two groups complete the transition, which is due to finish by the end of June. Customer support will be maintained throughout.
Launched in 2018, Beem lets users pay, request, transfer and split money instantly. The app has built a strong following in Australia for peer-to-peer payments and group expense tracking, and has maintained an average app store rating of 4.9 out of 5, according to AP+.
For AP+, the sale reflects a narrower focus on payments infrastructure rather than consumer-facing financial apps. It plans to concentrate on building and operating Australia's core payments and identity systems, including eftpos, the New Payments Platform, ConnectID and BPAY.
Chief Executive Lynn Kraus said Beem had become a popular app in Australia, but Bolt Group was better placed to expand its capabilities, grow its customer base and develop new experiences for the local market. She said the sale aligns with AP+'s decision to sharpen its focus on critical payments and identity infrastructure.
Bolt plans
Bolt Group is acquiring a product with an established user base at a time when competition in consumer finance apps is widening. In Australia, digital wallets, savings tools, investing platforms and payment apps increasingly overlap as providers try to capture more of a customer's everyday financial activity within a single service.
Bolt Group Australia Chief Executive James Woodward outlined broad plans for the app after the acquisition. He described Beem as a distinctly Australian success story with millions of registered users and said Bolt wants to turn it into an everyday money app that brings together payments, access to transaction and savings accounts, multi-currency features and investing in one experience.
"Beem is a uniquely Australian success story, with millions of registered users and a product that customers genuinely value. AP+ has built something special, and we are excited to take it into its next phase. Our vision is to evolve Beem into a true everyday money app - bringing together payments, a gateway to transaction and savings accounts, multi-currency and investing into a single, seamless experience," said Woodward.
Woodward also pointed to plans for a connected payments ecosystem linking consumers, merchants and partners, and said Bolt would continue investing in Beem's position among younger Australians.
"We also see a significant opportunity to build a connected payments ecosystem - bringing together consumers, merchants and partners to deliver faster, lower-cost and more rewarding financial experiences. Importantly, we will continue to invest in Beem's strong position with younger Australians, helping the next generation better understand, access and manage their money," he said.
The acquisition gives Bolt Group an entry point through a recognised Australian brand, rather than requiring it to build a new consumer app from scratch. It also provides access to a large user base in peer-to-peer payments, a category that remains important for younger consumers who use mobile apps to split bills, manage shared expenses, and move money quickly.
Strategic shift
AP+ was formed to bring together several parts of the country's payments system, and its shareholder base includes banks, merchants, payment service providers and processors. Its decision to exit direct ownership of Beem highlights the distinction between infrastructure assets and consumer products, with the group placing greater emphasis on the underlying rails used across the financial system.
Beem will now sit with a buyer looking to build a broader retail finance offering. Bolt's plans for the app point to a model that combines payments with access to accounts, foreign currency services and investing, bringing it closer to the multi-function finance apps that have gained traction in several markets.
No financial terms were disclosed. Customers will be able to use the app as normal during the transition period.
"There will be no immediate changes for existing Beem customers, with all services continuing as normal. AP+ and Bolt Group will work closely together to transition services by the end of June 2026, ensuring customers are supported throughout the process," said Woodward.
