Coupa launches largest AI release for procurement teams

Coupa has launched what it describes as its largest product release to date, with more than 250 changes focused on artificial intelligence tools for procurement and finance teams.

The update expands the company's use of autonomous software agents across sourcing, payments, invoicing and expense management. It also adds a new data product, Spend Pulse, and broader integration with external AI systems through Model Context Protocol.

More than 450 customers are now using Coupa's AI agents in production. Some have recorded reductions of up to 50% in requisition cycle times and 40% in sourcing cycle times since the first release of its Navi agents.

Coupa is also opening its platform to external AI agents, including Microsoft Copilot and custom-built systems, through MCP integration in Navi Connect. The framework provides more than 30 pre-built tools covering procurement, invoicing, contracts and expenses, with access governed by existing user permissions and security controls.

AI rollout

The latest release marks a push to move AI agents from targeted pilots into wider operational use. Custom agents built through Agent Studio have become the platform's most-used AI feature, with more than 400 created since the tool was introduced.

More than 50 specialised Navi agents have now been released across products in early access, limited availability or general availability. Newly generally available agents include tools for checking invoice attachments against invoice records, identifying early payment discount opportunities, and separating hotel room rates, taxes and meals on expense claims.

In accounts payable, Coupa cited one customer using its Navi Payment Batch Creation Agent. The tool ran 14 payment batches in five weeks, processing 2,395 payments worth USD $20.1 million.

That deployment used about USD $27 in AI credits and helped the customer save USD $2,000 in accounts payable staff spend in one week, allowing staff to focus on other work.

Another element of the release is Spend Pulse, designed to bring external market information into supplier negotiations. The product links US Bureau of Labour Statistics inflation data with enterprise spend data so procurement and finance teams can compare supplier pricing discussions against published economic indicators.

The aim is to provide a common reference point in negotiations and improve visibility into changing cost conditions. Spend Pulse is currently in limited availability.

Coupa is also adding more automation to sourcing work. Autonomous sourcing event creation and AI-guided supplier onboarding are intended to reduce manual steps such as template selection, item re-entry, supplier vetting and duplicate checks.

According to the company, fully automated intake-to-award sourcing flows could cut cycle times by about 80%, while leaving people responsible for oversight and approvals.

Broader platform

The release also reflects recent work to integrate assets acquired through Rossum and Tonkean into the core platform. Coupa says those businesses have strengthened its document processing, intake and workflow orchestration functions in accounts payable and broader spend management processes.

More than 40 customers have adopted the integrated Rossum and Tonkean offerings within two months of the acquisitions being completed. The additions support document ingestion, accounts payable automation and workflow hand-offs across enterprise spending processes.

Coupa also pointed to a global chocolate and confectionery manufacturer using AI-guided purchasing tools to assess category dynamics and supplier risk in real time, alongside recommendations based on its own buying history and volumes.

Salvatore Lombardo, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Coupa, outlined the company's position on the shift.

"We are shifting the modern procurement and finance leader from running manual operations to directing a high-performing, AI-augmented engine," Lombardo said.

"By letting autonomous agents handle complex payment, sourcing, and supply chain workflows, our customers can eliminate bottlenecks and focus their people on delivering transformational business outcomes that multiply their margins," Lombardo said.

Coupa says its platform draws on a dataset of more than USD $10 trillion in community-generated spend information and serves a network of more than 11 million buyers and suppliers.
