Dow Jones unveils AI-driven Factiva Smart Summary

Yesterday

Dow Jones has launched Factiva Smart Summary, an AI-enhanced feature within its business intelligence platform, designed to aid businesses with concise summaries for their research and decision-making processes.

Factiva Smart Summary incorporates generative AI capabilities, allowing corporations to access brief and informative summaries while maintaining transparency and traceability. This capability draws upon thousands of trusted news sources licensed specifically for generative AI usage.

Dow Jones has established licensing agreements spanning nearly 4,000 sources across 160 countries and 29 languages. This includes partnerships with The Associated Press, AWP Finanznachrichten AG, News Corp Australia, News UK, and The Washington Post, as well as Dow Jones's own news brands such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, MarketWatch, and more.

Almar Latour, Chief Executive Officer of Dow Jones and Publisher of The Wall Street Journal, commented on the launch: "This launch of Factiva Smart Summary harnesses recent advancements in GenAI technology to deliver reliable insights for decision-making, while upholding journalistic integrity. As a leader in business intelligence, we're dedicated to building responsibly and safeguarding publisher value."

Traci Mabrey, General Manager of Factiva, highlighted the platform's long-standing commitment to quality content: "For over 25 years, Factiva has connected businesses with trusted, copyright-compliant content. As generative AI ushers in a new era for media organizations, we're putting authenticity first. We believe transparency and fair compensation are essential to building a healthy media landscape—one where AI strengthens, not undermines, our industry."

Factiva Smart Summary is developed using Google's Gemini models on Google Cloud. This initiative is part of Dow Jones's broader integration of AI capabilities within its service offerings, which also include Factiva Feed for GenAI, Dow Jones Newswires GenAI Feed, Dow Jones Integrity Check, and RiskCenter Advanced Screening and Monitoring.

Michael Clark, President, North America, at Google Cloud, remarked on the collaboration: "Dow Jones's use of Google's Gemini models on Google Cloud to power GenAI search summaries marks a significant step towards leveraging the technology to enhance information access and analysis. By combining our models with the extensive Factiva content set, we're showcasing how GenAI can be a powerful tool for growth for the media industry."
