Hello Clever has launched Clever Connect, a product for platforms that distribute money to multiple parties.

The new payments offering is aimed at software platforms, marketplaces, gig economy apps and cross-border operators that need to split incoming funds between different merchants or sellers. It was designed as a simpler alternative in a market where Stripe Connect is a prominent incumbent.

Many platforms that handle multi-party payments still collect customer funds into a shared account before separating and reconciling them later. That process can create delays, manual work and added complexity, especially as businesses expand across borders or manage several currencies.

Clever Connect assigns a dedicated account to each merchant and revenue stream. It then links those accounts to domestic real-time payment rails in each market, allowing customer payments to go directly to the intended recipient as the transaction takes place, rather than into a pooled balance for later allocation.

In Australia, the service uses the New Payments Platform. In Japan, it connects to the Zengin System. Support for the United States is tied to the country's instant payment rails, FedNow and RTP, as part of a broader launch in that market.

The approach is intended to give platforms a clearer view of where funds sit at any given time. Because each payment is attributed to a merchant or revenue stream when it arrives, operators can monitor balances without waiting for the end of a settlement cycle to complete reconciliation.

Reducing complexity

One recurring challenge for platform businesses is the need to combine different providers and systems as they enter new markets. That can mean separate integrations for accepting payments, holding balances, making local payouts and handling currency conversion.

Hello Clever said Clever Connect combines dedicated accounts, connections to real-time payment rails, local virtual accounts and local-currency treasury functions in a single integration. It argues this reduces the engineering work needed to add merchants or enable support in another country.

Caroline Tran, Chief Executive Officer of Hello Clever, outlined the rationale behind the launch.

"Payments shouldn't get harder every time you add a merchant or a market, but for most platforms, that's exactly what happens," said Tran.

"We built Clever Connect so money moves in real time to the right place the moment a customer pays, and so growing platforms stay in control of how it all works, all without needing a big engineering team to hold it together," she said.

Merchants in Australia, and later in Japan and the United States, will also be able to hold settled funds in local currency. That means businesses can make domestic transfers from those balances for expenses such as supplier payments or wages, rather than converting funds more than once or waiting for an international transfer to clear.

Market backdrop

The launch comes as payment providers and software platforms adapt to the spread of real-time domestic payment systems in several major markets. Those networks are changing expectations around how quickly funds move between accounts and how much visibility businesses expect once a payment has been made.

Tran said current arrangements can still leave merchants waiting long after customers have paid.

"As real-time payments roll out globally, this level of both speed and accuracy with payments is becoming the norm. In some instances, merchants are seeing funds arrive up to a month after they are paid by their customers, largely due to the intricacies tied to internal payments systems," she said.

Hello Clever also drew a direct comparison with Stripe Connect, a common choice for platforms that need to onboard sellers and manage payout flows. Tran acknowledged the incumbent's position while arguing that platforms still take on substantial operational work as they grow.

"Stripe Connect is powerful, and keeping track of where each merchant's funds sit still tends to fall on the platform as it scales," she said.

"Clever Connect bundles dedicated accounts, real-time rail connections, local virtual accounts and local-currency treasury into a single integration, so platforms manage one system rather than stitching several together," said Tran.

Hello Clever said the product is available immediately, with local treasury accounts already live in Australia. Support for Japan and the United States is due to follow, extending the company's reach in markets where domestic instant payment infrastructure is increasingly central to how digital platforms move funds.

Tran said the speed of fund movement is likely to become more important as more marketplace and subscription businesses compete for merchants and users.

"In addition, the speed of payment changes everything for platforms," she said.

"As more marketplace and subscription platforms emerge, the pace and ease of payments will become a key differentiator between them and may be a key factor in their growth," said Tran.
