Logitech says audio accuracy key as AI voice dictation grows

Logitech ANZ says audio accuracy is becoming a central issue as voice dictation spreads through Australian offices, linking the shift to broader workplace use of AI tools.

The comments reflect a wider debate over how desk hardware should adapt as workers begin speaking to software for routine tasks once handled almost entirely by keyboard. Microphones, headsets and other audio tools now matter beyond video meetings because they also affect the quality of speech recognition in day-to-day work.

Telsyte, an Australian emerging technology analyst firm, estimates that one in five AI interactions in the country is now voice-based. That suggests spoken prompts and dictated text are moving from a niche workflow to a more common part of office activity.

Voice input has gained traction as generative AI tools are used more widely to draft messages, brainstorm ideas and produce code or notes from spoken instructions. In that context, audio quality can determine whether software returns an accurate result or introduces mistakes that then need manual correction.

Marisol Vargas, senior category portfolio manager, Logitech Personal Workspace Solutions ANZ, said dictation's appeal is closely tied to speed.

"From the typewriter to the computer, our fingers have been expressing what we think for over a century," Vargas said.

"However, they can also present a bottleneck. People speak at 130 to 150 words per minute, almost triple the average typing speed. Being able to speak an idea directly onto the page removes a key layer of friction, but only if switching back and forth to keyboards is easy, and voice can be captured properly.

"Where once headsets and microphones were vital to meetings, now they're key to opening up entire workflows at individual desks. Whether talking or typing, office workers using voice dictation software need hardware that performs well across both. After all, AI is only as accurate as the audio it receives."

The remarks point to an important qualification in the adoption of speech tools. While dictation can reduce the time it takes to turn an initial idea into text, poor audio pickup, background noise and awkward switching between voice and manual input can undermine those gains.

Hybrid workflow

Rather than presenting voice as a replacement for established office tools, Logitech framed it as part of a mixed workflow. That aligns with how many workplaces already use digital tools, with employees moving between keyboard, mouse, headset and webcam depending on the task.

Vargas said voice and typing suit different kinds of work. In her view, spoken input can be useful for first drafts, ideation and informal exchanges, especially when employees are away from a fixed desk or want to capture ideas quickly. Keyboards, by contrast, remain important for tasks that demand precision, such as editing text, entering figures or making structured revisions.

That distinction matters because many organisations are still working out where AI tools fit into normal business processes. Dictation may help at the start of a task, but much office work still depends on exact wording, numerical accuracy and careful formatting, which often favour manual input.

For hardware suppliers, the shift could broaden the role of accessories once marketed mainly for online calls. If workers increasingly use microphones for drafting documents or prompting AI assistants, demand may hinge not just on comfort or battery life, but on the consistency and clarity of recorded speech in ordinary office conditions.

The issue is particularly relevant in open-plan workplaces, where noise from conversations, keyboards and shared equipment can interfere with speech recognition. A worker dictating notes or prompts in that setting may need equipment that isolates the speaker's voice well enough for software to distinguish commands accurately.

Office change

The discussion also reflects a wider cultural change inside offices. For decades, the dominant sound of desk work was the tapping of keys, first on typewriters and later on computers. Mainstream AI systems have introduced a new pattern, with some workers now speaking instructions aloud as part of their routine.

Whether that becomes standard across workplaces will depend on more than software availability. Privacy, office etiquette and employee confidence in speaking to machines in shared spaces may all shape adoption. Even so, the growth of voice-based AI interactions suggests spoken input is becoming a practical consideration for employers, IT teams and hardware makers.

Vargas said the development should be seen as an expansion of workplace input methods rather than a contest between old and new tools.

"The keyboard did not replace the mouse, and nor will voice replace the keyboard," she said. "Each is just a powerful new partner to help extend our potential through our senses - touch, voice, hearing and sight. The future of productivity isn't touch or voice, but both, working in concert."
