Motorola secures NOK 1.78 billion contract in Norway deal

Today

Motorola Solutions has secured a contract to maintain and enhance Norway's nationwide critical communications network through the 2030s.

Motorola Solutions announced a five-year agreement with the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) to manage the Nødnett network, a national communications system crucial for over 60,000 first responders daily.

The contract is valued at NOK 1.78 billion (approximately USD $160 million) and includes an option for a two-year extension, commencing at the start of 2027 and continuing until 2031.

Director General Elisabeth Aarsæther at DSB stated, "The agreement is vital for public safety and emergency preparedness in Norway. In an increasingly demanding environment, Nødnett is a critical tool for emergency services and other preparedness organisations."

Since 2012, Motorola Solutions has been responsible for supporting Nødnett and will continue providing operational, lifecycle management, and technology upgrade services under this new agreement.

This effort ensures reliable and secure digital radio communications for emergency services across Norway, including police, fire, and medical services. Nødnett is engineered to reach 100% of the population, covering the country's vast mountainous terrain and numerous tunnels, and it integrates with TETRA networks in neighbouring Sweden and Finland, aiding cross-border collaboration between public safety entities.

"The TETRA standard is designed for the specific requirements of public safety users, providing proven resilience and reliability that's trusted by governments globally," commented Michael Kaae, Senior Vice President at Motorola Solutions. "We're proud to continue supporting the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection in helping to protect Norway's communities for years ahead."

Norway is among several nations, such as Denmark, Austria, and Portugal, that are investing considerably in digital radio network technology.

This trend is supported by findings from an Omdia report, which predicts continued growth in the TETRA market.

Motorola Solutions has rolled out more than 1,000 TETRA systems globally, ranging from nationwide setups to localised networks.
